Notes: Bulky. Highly variable in size and plumage. Female much larger, heavier than male. Legs
densely covered w. short stiff feathers. Dark morph: very dark upperparts; deep buff under w.
black speckling; buff facial disc edges w. black rim. Contact call: a loud deep hissing screech.
In Tas only dark morph occurs. Strictly nocturnal. Inhabits forests, woodlands w. old trees w.
hollows for nesting.
