Notes: Huge w. ridiculously long bill. Female is larger w. much longer bill! Unstriped face,
white eye-ring. Adult breeding plumage (Feb–Apr) can become rufescent. Juvenile crisper,
orderly pale markings on upperparts. Probes deeply for prey. Migrant from Siberian moorlands
& bogs to tidal mudflats etc. Very wary. Cf rare Eurasian Curlew — smaller, white rump, whiteish
underparts, and smaller again Eurasian Whimbrel which has head stripes.
