Notes: Long, curved bill. Adults mostly dark with iridescent green and reddish tones. Very thin
white border surrounding the dark facial skin. Bare skin forward of eye cobalt-blue during court-
ship, otherwise blackish. Dark eyes. Non-breeding head & neck heavily streaked sooty brown &
white; looks less glossy. Juvenile: dull, some whitish streaks & mottling on head & neck, short bill.
Feeds in shallow fresh water, s.times in estuarine waters, dry grassland.
